	Administrative setup The Government Medical College Amritsar works under the administrative control of Department of Medical Education & Research, Government of Punjab Chandigarh. Headed by a Minister of cabinet rank, the Department has an Administrative Secretary and subordinate functionaries. The Directorate of Research & Medical Education was established in the Year 1973, with the main function to develop and facilitate development of quality medical facilities in Government and Private Sectors strives to be the best provider and developer of high quality medical and paramedical manpower in the Northern region. GMC Amritsar performs following functions: The institute imparts teaching medical students towards attaining the degree of MBBS and Postgraduate training leading to MD, MS and Super specialization. Teaching includes theory and practical training. Research in the medical field. Training in paramedical courses including Medical lab technology, Bsc.Nursing. The institute imparts tertiary health care to people leaving in and around in this region and emergency service including trauma and disaster management. The local administration is carried out by the Principal.
